This week’s change: Stop routine NSAID consumption
Level of Discomfort (10 being the most painful): 5
Why: Because they are messing up your gut microbiome something fierce. They are pretty hard on the kidneys, too. Once you lose kidney function, you can’t regain it.
I know a lot of people who take NSAIDs (non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs) every day….just because. They think they are doing themselves a favor.
Not so much.
I cannot tell you how many people tell me things like:
“I take an aspiring every morning, just because.”
“I take an ibuprofen because something every day too keep discomfort at bay.”
The over the count NSAIDs most commonly abused by us are aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen (Advil, Motrin, Aleve, Nuprin). While seemingly innocuous and easily accessible, they are ok to use every now and then to relieve a short-term problem.
However, getting up every day and taking one “just because” is no good. Stop. Just stop.
What do we substitute in place of it, if anything? If inflammation is an issue, ginger is a great anti-inflammatory. So is turmeric. Buy some teas made with either (or both). You won’t regret it.
Potential Positive Outcomes: Healthier gut microbiome and kidneys.
