I’m a chef.
Food has been a HUGE part of my life. I resisted dietary changes like a mofo — Swear. To. Gawd. Eventually I had to face my fears and handle up on reality if my entire world was going to improve (read: change).
The last 10 years of my life has been a huge evolution.
I have gone from a New Orleans living, food slinging, beer and wine drinking, indulge-a-holic hot mess to a strong, vibrant, healthy, sober, and empowered female.
And…I’m doing it while living the life of my dreams at my favorite United States beach.
An accident? Ahhhhh, no.
In late July of 2007, two years after Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent levee breaks in New Orleans, I reached my pain threshold and had to do something about how miserable I had become.
I felt h-o-r-r-i-b-l-e!
I my body and spirit was a swirling toxic cesspool of pain, exhaustion and depression.
After this traumatic experience I was terrified that I was not going to ever be able to do the things I dreamed about most in my life.
What did I do?
I swallowed my fear, and dove into the deep end of the pool. I took a ginormous leap of faith.
Scary, scary stuff. No joke.
I sold my house and 97% all of its contents (I keep a 5′ x 5′ storage closet with some personal items) and set off on a road to personal discovery.
I spent 6 months traveling the United States before I liquidated the remainder of my life (my car and its contents) and stepped onto a plane at LAX with my back pack, a camera and a one-way ticket to Mexico (no phone, no laptop, no handy communication device).
Game on Universe, Game ON!
But here’s what I didn’t know at the time.
I was sick. Really sick.
However, like a lot of women in my shoes, I kept pushing through it all, hoping to eventually get on the right side of it.
I wasn’t sick enough to be bed ridden, but I never EVER felt good. EVER.
Aches, pains, exhaustion, brain fog…nagging B.S. Lots of it.
I just kept pushing.
I saw a myriad of healers along the way because… why not? I believe that healing takes many forms and our methodologies here in the U.S. leave me desiring something more rooted in a cure, not symptom management. I figured the rest of the world gets sick, let’s see how they handle it. I might learn something in the process,no?
Here I am a decade later a changed and vastly improved woman.
Food was my problem and food was also the solution.

On the other hand the good, whole, clean, fresh stuff can counteract what the processed stuff is doing to you.
What you choose to put in your mouth (and brain) is powerful – either as a disease promoter or a healthy cure.
