I’ve had some inquiries of late from folks who would like to learn a little bit more about me. I have been fortunate enough to have had a pretty amazing life and none of it has been by accident.
From a very young age I knew that I wanted a life that was vastly different from the one that my mother had and I made sure that I got it. To many, my life looks very glamorous because I’m single and don’t have kids. People tell me all the time how “lucky” I am to have so much freedom.
Ummmm, that’s not luck. I wanted my life to be this way.
I made so.
There was no luck involved.
You too, can choose at any time to change your life.
Stop right there. I hear you working up all the excuses as to why you can’t do what you want. Bullshit. If there’s a will, there’s a way. There is a huge difference between can’t do and will be very difficult. Can’t do only comes when you’re dead. So stop making excuses and get working on the life of your dreams.
If you are overweight, exhausted, swimming in a brain fog, achy all over, stiff from inactivity, scared, afraid and feeling vulnerable you are not alone.
You want to change your life?
Like REALLY seriously change your life but you aren’t sure where to start?
Change what you are eating.
Clean up your diet. REALLY clean it up don’t pretend to clean it up.
Stop eating processed foods. Eat only whole clean foods.
If you do, your life WILL change. It can’t NOT change.
It’s not complicated.
You ARE what you eat.
That’s not news to you, is it? If you are eating overly processed, lifeless and dead junk food then what are you?
If you are eating bold, clean, fresh, whole, energy giving foods, then what are you? Ummmm…
Be one of those amazing stories about people who finally go after their dreams.
Be THAT gal.
Or, you can sit at home in front of the TV with some snacks in your lap, miserable and feeling hopeless.
Here’s the quick and lowdown list of a few things that will help you get to know me a bit better.
I grew up in a housing project just outside of Boston, the youngest of 7 children in a single parent household.
I spent a lot of my youth in Harvard Square (Cambridge, MA) just observing. I’m certain that this is where my wanderlust came from. I’d sit on a bench with big eyes and great curiosity and watch people from all over the world walk by in their native clothing. It fascinated me to no end.
I won a couple of art awards in high school. Yup, I have an artsy side.
I attended college for one year. Hated it.
I did not attend culinary school. I learned through self-education and on-the-job training. I worked in kitchens before the TV Food Network was ever birthed and women in the kitchen were not the norm.
I started my career in the food service industry as a bartender.
I owned my own breakfast restaurant in Rockport, MA.
I moved from the Boston area (where I grew up) to New Orleans in December of 1997. My first job was as a fine dining waitress in an awesome restaurant called Gabrielle.
I worked in the music industry for several years in a variety of production jobs. I’ve been a tour manager, production coordinator, producer, associate producer, logistical coordinator, production assistant and on-air produce for live radio.
I have worked all over the world…Australia, New Zealand, Portugal, Mexico, The Bahamas and Switzerland. I have also visited Italy, Norway, Canada and Cuba (and 15 other Caribbean Islands).
I have been to 36 of U.S. States. Anyone dare to guess which swath of them I’ve missed?
I had a successful organizational business for several years pre-Katrina. It, like many local businesses, disappeared with the receding waters from the levee breaks. I was a CEO then, too. Do any of you remember what the CEO stood for ?
I picked up a hammer at 43 and got a job in construction, post-Katrina. Girls gotta pay the mortgage, right? I helped to re-build my beloved city with my own two hands for two long and hard years.
I have actively volunteered for most of my adult life. I’ve met some of the finest people I will ever know post-Katrina while giving my time to others. It totally renewed my faith in humanity.
In July of 2007 I sold EVERYTHING that I owed (house and car included) and went on a two year solo international journey. I was 45. After driving across the United States (Boston to Los Angeles), I slung my backpack over my shoulder, got on a plane with a one way ticket to Zihuatenajo, Mexico and literally disappeared for 4 months. After I resurfaced I continued my travel through Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica and the Bahamas before returning to the U.S. in September of 2009.
The summer of 2007 was when my current health journey “officially” began. It has been a LONG and exhausting experience but I am finally getting on the right side of it. FINALLY.
Nine months into my trip while in Antigua, Guatemala I was robbed and assaulted with a gun. It was a game changing moment for me. If you are so inclined, you can read about my big fat adventure here.
When I returned to the U. S. in September of 2009, I landed in Southeastern Florida. The gentleman who acted as my realtor during the process of renting a place to live, offered to send me to real estate school. I went, passed the exam (first try) and became a realtor. I hated living on the east coast of Florida. Loved the beach. Not so crazy about the people and local culture.
I returned to New Orleans in January 2011 and started blogging. The Ultimate Kitchen Commando was born.
I got a certificate in plant-based Nutrition from the T.Colin Campbell Foundation at Cornell University.
In 2012 I started doing wellness retreats.
I was the first person in the history of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival to do a raw food “cooking” demo.
My first blog terminated in November of 2014 (Ultimate Kitchen Commando) as my new brand emerged.
My new brand is going to be life changing for many, myself included. I am not dabbling any longer. I am all in and embarking on what I expect to be my best year EVER.
I am 52.
Put your seatbelt on.
It’s gonna be a r-i-d-e!
This year I am going to help a ton of women change their lives, improve their health and claim what is rightfully theirs.
We are going to eat our way to better health.
It all starts with one green smoothie.
