Week # 16
This week’s change: Probiotics – Start If You Haven’t Already
Level of Discomfort (10 being the most painful): 3
Why: Because if you ever took an anti-biotic at ANY time in your life, your gut bacteria needs some attention. There are many things that compromise our gut microbiome, but anti-biotics are the biggest treat. Probiotics help to re-establish a healthy balance of gut bacteria that antibiotics and modern life screw up.
Links: This is a really comprehensive article on probiotics. Read it. I don’t necessarily agree with soy or dairy based probiotic choices but there’s no denying they contain probiotics.
What do we substitute in place of it, if anything? If you are taking a probiotic already, buy a different brand and use it for a while. It’s good to change up your probiotic sources every now and then so you don’t create a monoculture in your gut.
If you’ve been only taking pills, buy some good fermented veggies and add a forkful of those to the mix daily.
Consider spore based probiotics. They are shelf stable and are taken with food to activate them. MegaSpore Probiotics has a great reputation in this arena.
Potential Positive Outcomes: Improve absorption of nutrients. Better digestion. Fewer GERD symptoms. Better bowel movements. Improved autoimmune outcomes.
