The term NUTRIENT DENSE is showing up more and more frequently in conversations around what we are eating.
For this, I am incredibly grateful.
Why? Because we should all be focused on nutrients. Nutrients fuel our bodies, they don’t just fill them.
Here’s the single most important thing you need to know about them…
“consuming nutrient dense foods gives you maximum nutrition with the least amount of calories. “
Whooaaaa. Did Jodi just use the “c” word.
Anyone who has hung around here for a while knows that I loathe calorie counting.
Thanks to the influence of media, most women are slaves to counting and monitoring every freaking thing in their life in an effort to feel better than they currently do.
It never works.
I don’t encourage calorie counting.
If you eat whole (unprocessed and preferably organic) foods, you can pretty much eat whatever you want. You won’t have to count a darn thing.
Quantity isn’t the issue.
Quality is THE issue. When it comes to calories..QUANTITY isn't the issue, QUALITY is the issue. Click To Tweet
As you might expect, the most nutrient dense foods are green. Yeah, not everyone wants to hear that, but it’s true.
Dr. Joel Fuhrman created an index to measure which foods have the highest nutrient-per-calorie density. He called it the aggregate nutrient density index (ANDI) and if you shop at Whole Foods, you will frequently see items posted with their ANDI rating. The index rates foods based on how many nutrients they deliver to your body for each calorie consumed. The more nutrients and fewer calories, the higher the rating.
Nutrient dense foods are where it’s at.
That whole trend in 100 Calorie snack packs makes me freaking insane. This is a chemical shit storm right here
Look at the quantity size on this. It’s less and one ounce. 100 calories of this bullshit will NOT provide you with the same amount of QUALITY nutrition that 100 calories of guacamole (or any other delicious whole food snack) will.
There is NO comparison.
How many men do you see counting calories? For real? Constantly monitoring your food intake by counting is a condition that has been perpetrated on women for way too long. WAY TOO LONG.
Calorie counting feeds into the already pitiful and low self image so many of us gals have.
Who do know who has had success with counting calories LONG term?
Name one person from your life, right now. Go!
I bet you can’t.
Constantly, all day long, reminding yourself in limiting ways how restrictive your life is because you have to count everything that goes into your mouth is STUPID.
Stop taking the freaking bait.
The other thing calorie counting means is that you are likely reading labels and eating processed foods. That is the bigger issues. Trust me, I know sometimes we need to grab and go but that kind of eating should be the EXCEPTION, not the rule.
Get used to having prepared whole foods as snacks. That’s where it’s at.
Nuts, seeds, fresh fruit, carrots (yes carrots!!!) for crunch, chia pudding, chocolate pudding, granolas and of course, green smoothies. All great options.
